About JuneteenthNY

Juneteenth is the the oldest, nationally celebrated day to commemorate the ending slavery in the United States. The name Juneteenth was derived from June 19th, 1865, the day when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas received word from General Gordon Granger that “all slaves are free”. This news made its way to Galvenston two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared that Black slaves were considered “free and delivered from enslavement.”

Perks of volunteering:

1. Team building

Great way to provide a sense of purpose to the work that you do everyday. Volunteering builds team spirit for your organization and we have been told makes associates feel warm and fuzzy inside.

2. Builds a stronger community

Volunteering builds connections which helps you disrupt harmful challenges in the community

3. Career growth

Volunteering allows you to learn new skills, build teamwork, exercise communication skills, problem - solve, manage different task and strengthen organizational skills. Great way to gain experience in an area that you are interested in. Plus, awesome resume builder.

4. Builds Self Esteem

Gives you a "helper's high" the thought that one seemingly small act can make a big difference to someone else. Makes you feel like you belong so it reduces loneliness, which we all have fallen victim to during COVID- which we hope never to return to.

5. Builds stamina

Who would have thought that volunteering would be an exercise but it really is. You get to work along side others in a fun manner and that never feels like work. So you can walk away possibly a little healthier then you started.
